WWII Letters from Captain Nicholas Norman Nicholas to his nephew Tom Oliver
In late 2025, my friend Tom W. Oliver, III showed me a binder which included WWII-time correspondence of his uncle, Nicholas Norman Nicholas, his mother's older brother. Nicholas had no direct descendants. Tom had possession of these letters because he was the only male child in his family of four siblings.
While fighting in Europe, during WWII Nicholas was a lieutenant in the US Army. He served under General George Patten in Africa, Sicily, Italy and in The Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Nicholas was assigned full time to Germany for six years. He returned to the United States as a captain. Nicholas' letters reflect his time as a soldier in Europe. Nicholas' letters not only relay his comments about the war, but also descriptions of his comrades and his relationships with them. Reading these letters is inspiring and adds a unique perspective on the WWII in Europe.
