WWII Letters from Captain Nicholas Norman Nicholas to his nephew Tom Oliver
In late 2025, my friend Tom W. Oliver, III (TWO3) showed me a binder which included WWII-era correspondence from his uncle, Nicholas Norman Nicholas, who was his mother's older brother. Nicholas had no direct descendants. Tom possessed these letters because he was the only male child among his family's four siblings. I offered to put Captain Nicholas' correspondence on my website and Tom agreed.
While fighting in Europe, during WWII Nicholas was a lieutenant in the US Army. He served under General George Patten in Africa, Sicily, Italy and in The Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Nicholas was assigned full time to Germany for six years. He returned to the United States as a captain. Nicholas' letters reflect his time as a soldier in Europe. Nicholas' letters not only relay his comments about the war but also descriptions of his comrades and his relationships with them. Reading these letters is inspiring and adds a unique perspective on WWII in Europe.
