Picto Diary - 7 to 19 October 2026 - Trike

Above: Ivins, UT. 08 October 2026.

TIMDT’s e-trike is working out on several counts.

1. TIMDT can stay outdoors for a good long stretch now.

2. Freddie likes being with her, so that big Newfoundland covers more ground. For reasons known only to the dog (and maybe a biscuit or two), he prefers TIMDT about three times over poor old Mwah (sic). Often, when it’s just the two of us and I try to get him walking, he plants himself and stares me square in the face, as if to say the better option is still back at the house.

3. Even so, I still get my daily walk in, with Margaret and Freddie for company.

Coffee and sunrise. Recommended by my nutritionist, Jennilynn. TIMDT joins for the "event."

TIMDT and Mwah (sic) completed watching this six part series today. It was intense. TIMDT would only watch one episode a day. Here is a review of the novel which I read in 2022.

"East of Eden" by John Steinbeck | Stephen DeWitt Taylor

Created by Zoe Kazan (granddaughter of the 1955 film’s director Elia Kazan), the seven-episode series premiered on October 1, 2026. It stars Florence Pugh as Cathy Ames/Kate, Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee as Lee, and Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton. It covers the multi-generational saga from the post-Civil War Connecticut Trasks through the Salinas Valley years up to World War I, preserving key plot points and the central “timshel” (“thou mayest”) idea of free will over determinism.

The series tracks the novel’s main narrative spine and core themes reasonably well.

The series preserves:

The Trask family trajectory: Cyrus’s abusive favoritism of Adam over Charles, Cathy’s arrival and marriage, the move to California, the twins Cal and Aron, Cathy’s departure and life as the brothel madam Kate, revelations about parentage, Cal’s wartime bean speculation, Aron’s confrontation with his mother, and the ending in which a dying Adam grants Cal the possibility of choosing differently.

Biblical Cain-and-Abel parallels across generations, themes of inherited sin versus personal choice, jealousy, and moral complexity.

Major specific events involving Cathy/Kate (manipulation, the shooting of Adam, taking over the brothel, poisoning Faye, etc.)

Above: A Passage to India (movie). 15 October 2026
TIMDT and Mwah (sic) watched this movie today, TIMDT for the second time.

A Passage to India (1984, directed by David Lean) is set in 1920s British colonial India. Young Englishwoman Adela Quested travels to the town of Chandrapore with her fiancé’s mother, Mrs. Moore, to meet her intended, city magistrate Ronny Heaslop.

Frustrated by the British community’s rigid segregation and desire to experience “the real India,” they befriend the kind Indian doctor Aziz. He organizes a picnic to the mysterious Malabar Caves. There, Adela has a disorienting, unexplained experience and later accuses Aziz of attempted sexual assault. The charge sparks a sensational trial that inflames racial and cultural tensions between the British rulers and the Indian population.

Adela eventually retracts the accusation, recognizing it was unfounded, but the incident shatters friendships and exposes the deep barriers of empire and prejudice. The film explores themes of cultural misunderstanding, colonial power, and the difficulty of genuine human connection across divides.

TIMDT and Mwah (sic) watched this movie today.

The Painted Veil (2006, directed by John Curran) is set in the 1920s. London socialite Kitty Garstin marries quiet bacteriologist Dr. Walter Fane largely for convenience and escapes to Shanghai with him, where he works in a government lab.

Bored and restless, Kitty begins an affair with the charming married diplomat Charles Townsend. When Walter discovers the betrayal, he forces her to accompany him to a remote Chinese village ravaged by a cholera epidemic as a form of punishment. Amid the suffering and danger, Kitty confronts her selfishness, becomes involved in helping the community (including at a local orphanage), and the couple gradually rediscovers respect and affection for each other. Walter contracts cholera and dies; Kitty returns to England with their child, transformed by the experience.

The film explores a failing marriage, personal redemption, cultural displacement, and the impact of crisis.

17 October 2026

At the beginning of the season, I announced five teams I would follow. Four with a Utah connection: Michigan (Whitingham), Texas (Sarkisian), Utah, and BYU (where I am an alum). And, University of Miami, where I served on the Citizens Board for a few years and where I watched my son Koessler get a BA and a law degree.

Michigan: Rocky start but positive trajectory. I'm rooting for Kyle.

Texas: Sarkisian is in trouble.

Utah: Looking good. I'll be rooting for Cougars in showdown three weeks from now, but very proud of both teams. Should Utah win and go forward winning, that wouldn't be a bad outcome!

BYU: Final BYU drive against ND made me a believer. I was present at BYU/Michigan 1984 Jack Murphy stadium. Time for a BYU national champion repeat at CFP this season.

Miami: A nirvana season for me would BYU and Miami meet in the national championship game. Miami/Utah would be a good consolation prize.

A pretty good season where four of the five teams I'm following are doing well!

Addendum:

Your summers in South Dakota meant you were only about 300 miles from my childhood home in Minneapolis. Why didn't l know that fact? Or did you once tell me long ago and it slipped my mind? Remember that l said the PHS girl group was meeting for lunch this week? Change of plans. We will be attending Chris Wright (Hunter) husband's funeral instead. The crowd is thinning. Enjoy each day before we circle the drain. That was the doctor's advice when l spent 5 hospital days beating sepsis. I had so many CT scans l will wear my glow-in-dark skeleton for Halloween costume this year.😊

Good to see you. Regret the passing of Chris' husband. I met him at a high school reunion. Say hi to the PHS girls.
