Picto Diary - 27, 28 July 2015 - Montecristo
LSDM ROMEOs ruminate. Wasatch Bagel. Park City, UT. 27 July 2015.
From left clockwise: Solar, Dentist, Camario, Kastle formerly Stockli (soon en route to his annual ski fling in Portillo, Chile), Miami Jim, Montage, TWO3, 'Cake.
Rosie, behind the counter, prepares a bagel sandwich.
Good turn-out considering no speaker.
Above: Camario stands to right of monument marking the southwest corner of Wyoming. 27 July 2015. Closest bike is Camario's 2015 BMW 1200 RT (very highly rated sport touring bike) motorcycle. Behind, my 2005 BMW K1200 LT motorcycle. The old LT continues to do well. I had taken it out today for its first ride of the season, in anticipation of another ride, later in the week, where TIMDT intended to do a loop to Jackson, WY and back on an overnighter.
My bike of choice is the new Duc - 2015 Multistrada - but, I intend to keep the LT, a better choice for two up, as long as TIMDT is willing to take a ride or two with me each summer.
Camario and Mwah (sic) rode a 225 mile northeast loop starting and ending in Park City, UT. We dined at Don Pedro in Evanston, WY, where the steak tacos were good enough to merit a return trip.

Part of the Bishop's right arm appears to be in Wyoming.
For a brief moment, as the time line of world history advanced, the Bishop's location on earth was ambiguously placed.
Above: Cover for Arthur Conan Doyle's first Sherlock Holmes novel, "A Study in Scarlet." File image. 27 July 2015.
We attended a dinner hosted by 1% and Comic Mom, where Michael Homer, a lawyer/historian, was post dinner speaker, taking as a topic, Conan Doyle's Utah connection.
In the novel, Holmes solved a London murder of two Mormon missionaries.
Flash back (half the novel) to 1847 Salt Lake City where Mormons found a wandering father and daughter (Lucy) near death in the desert. The girl grows up and falls in love with a non Mormon, Hope. Brigham Young tells the girls father that the girl must marry a Mormon Elder, Drugger.
The girl's father is killed and forced to Marry Drugger by Mormon authorities. Lucy dies of a broken heart after only one month of marriage to Drugger.
Hope vows to get revenge. Hope follows Drugger and his associate to London where he murders them.
"A Study in Scarlet" is about how Sherlock Holmes and the consulting Watson solve the crime.
"A Study in Scarlet" was not complementary to the Mormons. Conan Doyle was not highly regarded by LDS church members post its publication.
In the 1890's Conan Doyle traveled to Salt Lake City. He was given an opportunity by LDS church leaders to speak in the Salt Lake Tabernacle about his embracing of "Spiritualism." The speech was well attended.
Before his departure from Salt Lake City, Conan Doyle was asked if he regretted his negative portrayal of the LDS in "Study in Scarlet." He responded to the effect that he didn't feel the need to change anything he wrote thirty years previously, but, that based on his current visit to Salt Lake City he felt that he was well treated and that the LDS were fine people.
I was privately embarrassed as I listened to Homer's remarks. I have considered myself as having a more than average knowledge of LDS history, yet, Homer's speech about Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes was the first time that I had been made aware of a "Utah connection."

TIMDT and Mwah (sic) dined on the deck with Maui and 'Cake. Folk music players were performing nearby on the lawn... winter location of the ski-in to Steins from the Viking Lift.
Our setting and ambiance was every bit that shown in the above image.

I wish I was there for the church service. Did you play for the PC Ward?

Yes. PC Ward.
Steve,
I cannot get beyond my tears as I read this. Sorry...call all me an old sap...but I was so moved by your calling to serve as a back-up to your organist. I love the organ as well, and can barely sit through a Sunday service here in Miami and listen to the Doxology played with no reverence to the Creator. I would love to have been there to hear you play the organ. I know that the Lord was clearly behind every note. He called you to be exceptional and you are. Listen carefully for His next assignment.
With great affection for both you and Margaret,

Well, Magnolia, you better hear me before you praise me! Suffice to say, I enjoyed it. TIMDT said I did OK... and there were many thanks from members of the congregation.
Hear, hear!! Well said [Bob Goodman].

"Attended University of Utah where was member of renowned women's gymnastics team. On two national championship teams in the 90's. Daughter of an athlete. Dad, Terry Preston, played basketball for University of Wisconsin."
There was a Terry Preston who played basketball, a guard, for University of Utah, probably around the early 90's, who I recall marrying a gymnast. Possibly her husband instead of her dad?

As I have said, note taker fallible. Thanks for the correction. I think you are right.
What a terrific thing, wish we could have been there, as Deborah and I love to hear organ Church music (not like the weaselly playing Deb grosses about at our Church every Sunday we are there--Plymouth). Is this maybe a prelude to your becoming active again at the Church?
