La Société Deux Magots (LSDM) is a non-partisan ROMEO (retired old men eating out) group which meets daily, at 7:00 AM at Wasatch Bagel in Park City, UT. LSDM members are the rightful intellectual heirs of a group of authors and artists (Hemingway, Joyce, Sartre, Picasso, Camus, de Beauvoir) who met daily at Cafe Deux Magots, in Paris, France in the 1930's.

Bishop question in the Q and A: Park City, where I live, has a population of 8000. 2000 are Hispanic and of those, 1000 are purported to have entered the US illegally. All of Park City's Hispanics, legal or not, are hard workers; all working two or three jobs... construction, hospitality, landscaping etc. Should 1000 Park City Hispanics be forcibly repatriated to their home countries, Park City would be thrust into a recession. Think about the same issue on a national scale. How do we reconcile the fact that large numbers of illegals are performing essential tasks in our Park City, and national, workforces, with the current announced policy that all illegal aliens are to be expelled from the country? What about introducing something like the guest worker programs used so successfully in the Emirates?

Moore: Check out the Dignity Act of 2025 introduced by Florida Congresswoman Maria Salazar. This initiative, or similar, does not have momentum in the current Congress, but it should. President Trump is the only person who can make something like this happen. His success on the border is a partial solution to the US immigration problem. I think that there is a good chance that something like The Dignity Act will be pushed home by Trump before the end of his term.

I was somewhat encouraged by Moore's answer. This is the first time I had heard of an initiative designed to bridge the seeming unbridgeable gap between some 20 million illegals being in the country and the impossibility of repatriating all of them in some realistic time frame.

Here is a link to the Dignity Act:

Rep. Salazar Introduces Historic Bipartisan DIGNITY Act to Finally Fix America's Broken Immigration System | Representative Maria Salazar

From Salazar's website... the functional equivalent of the Emirates guest worker program is underlined.  Her other provisions also make sense.

Key provisions of the Dignity Act include:

  • Border Security: Fully funds modern border infrastructure and enforcement.
  • Mandatory E-Verify: Prevents illegal hiring and protects American jobs.
  • Asylum Reform: Ends catch-and-release, and ensures timely and credible outcomes.
  • Dreamer Protections: Grants legal status and a path to permanent residency.
  • The Dignity Program: A 7-year earned legal status program allowing undocumented immigrants to live and work legally, with renewable status based on good conduct and restitution.
  • Workforce Development: Expands training, apprenticeships, and education for American workers.
  • Legal Immigration Reform: Updates visa categories to align with 21st-century economic needs.
Salazar's Dignity Act 2025 is a start.  We should get behind it as a potential solution to America's so far intractable immigration problem.

CHRIS GALLAGHER
Chris grew up in the Pelham section of the Bronx New York in a neighborhood that had eight outdoor full court basketball fields. He had already fallen in love with the game at the age of 10 and in five short years he would become the hub of the 1964 and 1965 Monsignor Scanlan High School teams, that were among the best in the CHSAA during that time.

He was nationally recruited by top colleges and ranked as the best player in the New York area behind Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

His academic prowess and his skill with a basketball presented him with many opportunities, and he chose to attend Harvard University where he was an All Ivy and All New England selection.

He was also inducted into the Harvard and New England Hall of Fame.

Chris tried out with the Philadelphia 76’ers but instead played top division professional basketball in Neuchatel Switzerland. When he returned to the USA he completed his law degree at University of Pennsylvania Law School and practiced Securities Mergers and Acquisitions Law before founding his merchant banking firm.

Chris has devoted his life to helping others, especially helping children get a quality education and attend college. He has provided thousands of children with life-changing opportunities and has had leadership roles in many other organizations helping youth in need. 98% of Monsignor Scanlon’s students are minority teenagers living in financially challenged households.

When he heard Monsignor Scanlon High School was closing in 2010, he started a campaign to keep the school open and put together a board of trustees to revitalize the Catholic Youth Organization in the Archdiocese of New York as chairman. He also gave his time to the Inner City Scholarship Fund, which provides students with funding to attend Catholic schools.

Hats off to Chris Gallagher for his dedication and contributions, giving back to the kids of The Bronx! The Bronx recently gave back to Chris, by inducting him into The Bronx Basketball of Fame in November 2024!

Declining tax receipts and competition from PC Canyons (Summit County) and DV East Valley (Wasatch County) foreshadow serious economic threats to Park City's sustained success.  The specter of Park City leadership's usual MO of kicking the can down the road needs to be replaced with defibrillation:  repurposing the 5 acres as a revenue generator; repairing abysmal relationship with UDOT and state of Utah; using  Richardson Flats to resolve workforce housing, transportation, commercial, DV access issues  among others.  Of mayor candidates, only Jack Rubin possesses the required high level  strategic planning and management skills required to guide Park City successfully in an environment of unprecedented economic threats

Dana is not willing to predict the outcome of Park City elections. Dana: Clark Ranch is a complicated operation. Once a road is put up there it could link to further development in Wasatch County. Dana, the "open space mayor" equivocates on support for Clark Ranch development, but is very much against linking Richardson Flats into Park City housing schemes. 5 acres? Yes. Tax revenue options should be considered. Dana is dividing time between Mexico and Park City.

Addendum

As things stand right now BYU and probably Utah will be in the College Football playoffs - especially if the NCAA adopts the proposed 24 team bracket-like championship playoff schedule.

Hi Banker Steve:

By choice, the last 6 years I have limited my public appearances to one per year. This is my one time in 2025 - I'd put him off since March, finally caved Oct. 6.

Now I'll return to my sedate life off the Net and out of the public eye, motorcycling here in the sunset versus looking at it from Montana (now in Chiang Mai for the winter with my stable of five motorcycles). Hope to cull this this Thai herd by a couple over the winter.

Best,

Dr. G,
