The other couple came specifically to see the Spiral Jetty (she worked at the Smithsonian and knew a lot about the art) but they were unaware that fifteen miles up the road they had passed the Golden Spike Monument where railway coming from the west was joined with railway coming from the east in May 1869. When engine Jupiter from the Central Pacific RR moved up cow catcher to cowcatcher with Union Pacific 119 at Promontory Point, overland travel time from NYC to San Francisco was reduced from five months to one week. You'd think people coming all this way would know about Promontory Point!!
