I remember many years ago, before you were born, my parents would put me on the bus in Phoenix that would take me over night to Provo to spend a week or two with your Mom and Dad. Your Mom is my oldest sister, 11 years older than I, and we loved being together and your Dad became a favorite person for me. When I was 12 was the first time I went alone on the bus. My Mother said sit close behind the bus driver and when you have stops stay close to the bus driver. Our first stop Flagstaff about 10 p.m. I went into the restaurant and sat fairly close to the bus driver. He ordered black coffee and so I ordered black coffee.
The next stop was about four in the morning in Panguich so I followed the bus driver into the restaurant and when he ordered black coffee I also ordered black coffee. We got to Provo at about 10 a.m. where your Mom met me. That was the first time I ever drank coffee and to this day it's still black coffee.
The route was via Highway 89 and my memory is rich with memories of the wonderful scenery that is found on that route, Cameron, the vermillion cliffs, Kiabab Forest , and all the wonderful little towns set in bucolic settings. It was a wonderful time getting to learn about the beauty of Southern Utah. I was also fortunate enough to have my parents allow me to ride a mule down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, ride a horse down into Bryce Canyon and to go up into the narrows of Zion's Canyon. We also drove across the 11,000 ft.road to Cedar Breaks where, even though it was summer, there was snow still across a meadow near the tree line. My Father and I took a bucket and walked across the meadow to get snow to put our Cokes in to keep cold when Dad saw fresh bear track and grabbed a bucket full of snow and my hand and we ran back across the meadow back to the car where Mother was waiting. It was a pretty exciting experience.
