Picto Diary - 01 to 12 May 2025 - Mother's Day Chez Granny

Above: Coral Gables, FL. Circa 1997. Nostalgia pic.
For a period of a couple of years, 1997 to 1998, I'd do a skate, three or four times a week, from our condo at Abitare in Coconut Grove, Miami to the Cocoplum subdivision of Coral Gables, where we lived from 1986 to 1988. Round trip ten miles. PS. A great pic of TIMDT, the most photogenic person I have ever known.
Back to the present. This first part of May has included a bit of aimless hanging out in Ivins and Park City along with doctors' appointments in SLC. For me, scans and consultations on my brain bleed and hernia. For TIMDT, scans and consultations on her lung condition. My eight cracked ribs seem mostly healed eight weeks after my ski fall at Deer Valley. We're both OK for now... ie. we're out and about enjoying times with friends and family. But getting old does seem to entail additional complications. Not complaining. We are grateful for our current full lives and hope to string active life vitality out as long as we can.

LSDM Scions Update - Meeting Nick Wenker (at right in image).
Nick is a quasi-scion. He's a bestie of LSDM scion Ari Herbert, son of LSDM regular KAT. Scion Ari, an attorney in Austin, Texas encouraged Nick to visit LSDM.
Nick is assistant General Counsel for Young Living. Young Living is a multi-level marketing company based in Lehi, Utah. Young Living was founded by Donald Gary Young in 1993. It sells essential oils and other related products. LSDM ROMEOs listened attentively as Nick told his story. Swiss immigrant at the age of six. Dad was an MD. Family struggled from the outset. Dad to requalify as MD. Family had to learn English. "I learned English quickly at six years of age, but I was somewhat of a ne'er do well up through high school. I finally got a hold of myself and started to focus. I went to UT Austin undergrad and majored in political science. I got a law degree from UT Austin. That's where I became friends with Ari. After law school I joined Kirkland and Ellis law firm in Houston. A year later I joined Dad, now retired, on a visit to see his friend Gary Young in Lehi. Gary offered me a job, which totally caught me by surprise, and I took the offer and my wife and I made the move to Lehi." ROMEOs listened to more of the story. Nick's interest in politics. His family's adjustment to LDS ground 0 in Lehi. He has worked for John Curtis, and he has political aspirations. Nick is one of the leading US players of Warhammer 40,000. He and his wife dabble in psychedelics. Where is Wesley Smith when you need him? Nick's wife started an AirBnb management company in St. George where she manages over thirty properties. LSDM ROMEOs love hearing stories about scion and quasi scion achievement. Scion achievement stories leave the ROMEOs feeling more optimistic about the future in an era where it often seems that human progress has slowed.

Addendum
Thank for another great job taking notes and narrowing the focus. Sorry I missed Saturday, and how was talk with Larry Ellison? Any shockers?
Mezzanine,
Miami, FL
Nope. We left before the Ellison event. I'm sure it was excellent, but I'd like to see more speakers coming out of the Trump administration. Trump's group of disruptors and renegades are leading us into a vector shift that could position Trump on the level of Washington, Lincoln, or FDR, forget Mt. Rushmore.
Wonderful photos! Springtime in the Rockies at last!

Above: Grandsons skiing Mt. Blanc off the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix - - lots of hiking at 12,000 feet, the kind of stuff only 30-year-olds can do!

Very cool. I won't make it there. 90% of my skiing has been in Utah. 5% in Japan. Three or four visits to Telluride, and two ski dates at Fariah in Lebanon, in the early '70's. I have grandkids that have to skills to ski at Mt. Blanc. Maybe this note will give them encouragement.
