Picto Diary - 01 to 05 September 2025 (Supplement) - Miners Day (Labor Day)

Ten of those silver balls running down Main Street are mine. I paid for them. A contribution to charity via the Park City Rotary Club. If one of them rolls first into the chute at the end, I win a prize... like, say a free annual ski pass at Deer Valley. Should I ask for my money back because two kids reached into the runway and grabbed, each, a ball for themselves? One of those balls coulda (sic) been mine! I coulda (sic) been a winner and now I'll never know. Oh well, its for a good cause.

My second trip here in as many weeks.
Locomotives (replicas) Jupiter, Central Pacific and No. 119, Union Pacific, face off at point where original locomotives met to celebrate the completion of the transcontinental railway on 09 May 1869.

Bishop 'n 119 engineer Cole. Cole works full time for the National Parks department. He loves his job as locomotive engineer and maintenance mechanic. Jupiter and 119 come daily to the point where the golden spike was driven from a garage about a mile away.

The end of the jetty can be seen at right of image. The salt water begins about a quarter mile beyond where I'm standing. There was a 70 something German couple there. In my experience, the Germans are the most serious travelers. Go someplace remote in Utah... and you'll often find Germans. The Smithson Foundation really has to do something to refurbish the Spiral Jetty, now almost wholly covered with sand.

Eatin' good in the 'hood at Utah's most celebrated and highest customer volume restaurant. Was with TIMDT, Lisa and Mark. Maddux opened in 1949 and has pretty much the same menu today as it did on opening day. I had hamburger steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, and Mormon rolls with strawberry butter. eg. Maddux does not serve alcohol. Desert: Peach pie and vanilla ice cream. Service is consistently extraordinary. We try to get to Maddux at least a couple of times a year. Perry is 90 miles from Park City. Hard to get into at lunch time. We try to go after 2:30 PM to avoid a wait. No reservations. Closed Sunday and Monday.
