La Société Deux Magots (LSDM) is a non-partisan ROMEO (retired old men eating out) group which meets daily, at 7:00 AM at Wasatch Bagel in Park City, UT. LSDM members are the rightful intellectual heirs of a group of authors and artists (Hemingway, Joyce, Sartre, Picasso, Camus, de Beauvoir) who met daily at Cafe Deux Magots, in Paris, France in the 1930's.  http://www.LSDM-Parkcity.com

January 2025

Melanie Monestere, Candidate for Utah House 4 Special Election, speaks to La Societe Deux Magots (LSDM) via Zoom, 06 January 2025.
She highlighted the need for property tax relief for seniors, as many have seen their taxes double in the past five years, and the importance of keeping seniors in their homes.

General Shutler discussed the urgency and challenges faced during a series of nighttime operations. He detailed the difficulties encountered during beach surveys and landings, including the loss of some personnel.

Canice Harte, County Counselor, Summit County, UT, speaks to La Societe Deux Magots (LSDM), 06 February 2025 via zoom.
Canice and Jack Rubin discussed the importance of representation and the challenges of balancing different interests. Canice emphasized the need to protect the community and way of life and expressed concerns about the influence of developers in the state government. He also shared his fears about the potential unintended consequences of a referendum and the impact on property rights.

Trump’s policies endanger the rights of Americans by undermining due process and focusing on mass deportation rather than public safety. Nearly six million US citizens have US citizenship by birthright but also have parents without legal status. Millions more, including former Vice President Kamala Harris, were born to parents with temporary legal statuses. Mass deportation could also separate threequarters of a million US citizens from their spouses.

Lift lines 2024/5 Vail, CO. Taylor Schmidt, Principal, Late Apex Partners, speaks about his Vail Corporation to La Societe Deux Magots (LSDM) via zoom, 20 February 2025, via zoom.
Taylor discussed the decline of Vail's return on assets and investor confidence due to poor management and investment decisions. The company has been propped up by a growing dividend and stock buybacks funded by debt. Taylor also highlighted the durability of the ski resort business and Vail's leading position in mountain ownership. Despite the challenges, Taylor believes Vail has great potential for growth and can regain its former glory.

The project now includes 47% deed-restricted affordable housing units, with about 2/3 targeting 44-60% of Area Median Income (AMI). The remaining 1/3 will be 80-144% AMI. Marc emphasizes that this location is ideal for affordable housing due to its proximity to transit. The project's progress is tied to milestones for improvements to SR-224, ensuring that infrastructure upgrades happen alongside development.

Cooper presents his ROI calculation method, which estimates lifetime earnings with and without a degree, subtracts college costs, and adjusts for non-completion risk. He shares examples of ROI for different degrees and majors, highlighting significant variations even within the same university. Cooper also notes that some technical trade certificates can offer better ROI than typical bachelor's degrees, while many master's degrees may not justify their costs.

Howard suggested exploring the possibility of building workforce housing on city-owned land, such as the 5-acre site purchased by the town for 19 million dollars. He proposed that the land could be developed to compete economically with luxury condos by increasing density.

[SDT] asked Tory to provide examples of situations where East Side people felt they were being overlooked due to the At-large representation. Tory responded by discussing the budget and how it could be managed differently. He mentioned the Health Department's spending on mental health issues related to climate change and the potential for reducing this budget.

June 2025

Elizabeth Rasmussen, Executive Director of Better Boundaries, Utah speaks to La Societe Deux Magots (LSDM) 03 June 2025.
She explained that Better Boundaries was formed in 2017 to stop gerrymandering through citizen led reform, and after the passage of a ballot initiative, the Utah State Legislature stripped the independent redistricting commission of its authority. Despite legal challenges and a significant victory in the Utah Supreme Court in July 2024, the outcome of the case is still pending.

Sarah explained that KPCW, a community radio station serving Summit and Wasatch County, relies on federal funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) for a portion of its annual operating budget. She highlighted that the White House has requested the repeal of $1.1 billion in funding for public broadcasting, which would impact KPCW's ability to provide services such as local news, music rights, and emergency alert systems.

Harriet Hageman discussed the importance of affordable and reliable energy for controlling AI, predicting an increase in nuclear and coal power plants in the coming decades.
