Don't sell US education short. In China, for example, students learn how to take exams... but, Chinese students don't learn as well as American students, how to think.

One of his greatest thrills was pitching in and winning 2001 world series in 7 games while playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. They beat the Yankees and he related how they did it coming from behind against Mariano Riveria in the 9th inning, triggered by ex Cub and Gold glove 1st baseman Mark Grace. He also related how the winning hit by Louis Gonzales would have been an out if the infield would not have been drawn in, and how Tim McCarver the announcer suggested before the hit that maybe because Rivieria throws so many "cutters" inside that the Yankees should be playing back. Then Mike said we were just glad McCarver was in the broadcast booth and not managing the Yankees.

On all classes of airplanes there may be up to 15 incidents a day that are never reported to the public. Boeing engineers keep bags packed in the trunk of their cars and are dispatched regularly to the local of the incident to deal with the problem.

Students enrolled in Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York City numbered 300,000 in the 1950's. Today, enrollment in Catholic schools numbers only 75,000.

February 2013

Tim's family tree included the 707, 717, 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, and 777 airplanes; V-22 military airplane, and a "bunch of other stuff." He also did the early design for the 787 before he opted for early retirement to focus on skiing (and consulting).

Cadinha believes federal government expenditures are excessive and hamper economic growth... better stimulated by reduced regulation and lower taxation. For example, the Energy Department was started in the Carter administration when US imported 30% of its oil. The US now imports 70% of its oil and the Energy Department has 30,000 employees.

The players generally don't reference well with "white guys in suits" He said when he and Shaq were teammates at the Miami Heat Shaq would hold court in the locker room telling BS stories that the young players believed hook, line and sinker, which Mike laughed at because both he and Shaq knew they were made up, however the young players followed them as their "code of conduct".

"Disruptive technologies (on line education, say) will have an impact, but, for the average 18 year old starting engineering in college, there is a lot more we're doing than just teaching engineering. Some people need a "hand hold." Some people need to develop socially. A university is much more than a degree program.

The US Constitution provides that the states bear the responsibility for education. Notwithstanding, the federal government funds about 11% of public education and targets its funds, in kind of an emergency response system, to where it believes it can do the most good.

When he was still active in the reserves Jack applied for and was appointed by then Secretary of the Navy, Gordon England to serve on one of several three judge tribunals to interview detainees at Guantanamo to determine if they were in fact, enemy combatants.

Teacher morale is low in schools where Common Core has been implemented. Teachers are constrained to teach in a dumbed down, cookie cutter fashion.

The idea for the WorldChronos came in a twenty-minute sketching session when I began to draw what I thought a world-time watch should look like because I couldn't find one to my liking. It is the only watch which simultaneously displays the time and day and date of all the major cities of the world.

Park City graduates, Ember Conley noted, are quite well prepared in science, technology, engineering, and math - STEM - topics if we go by their acceptances to top college engineering programs. Ms. Conley acknowledged, however, that the number of AP level courses in STEM topics lags behind the total for non STEM subjects. She said that we need to bring in technical subjects earlier in the grade school curriculum than we do today.

It is commonly accepted in the United States that public education is a state responsibility. However there is a history going back to the 19th century of federal participation in education. Fritz noted two areas where the federal government has been involved with public education and dismissed claims that the federal government has any involvement in a third - The Common Core.

We're educating kids for jobs that don't even exist today. The days of only learning "stuff" are gone. We have to learn "stuff," sure, but, more important is teaching kids how to think and solve problems with the "stuff." This will be our focus at Park City Day School.

Winter Sports School kids have gone to Stanford... to Williams. 90% of our kids go to college. There are ancillary benefits to a competitive extra-curricular experience... discipline... concentration... focus... Parents must help their kids make trade-offs in life as to what will benefit them most in an educational experience.

The city council talks about affordable housing several times a month. The big question is, "where do you put it?" Everyone supports affordable housing. But, you have to be careful of talking about it only in sound bites. Affordable housing is a complex issue.

Our transportation plan is in its infancy. We need to reduce the number of cars that come in and out of the city. There are transportation alternatives that people could be encouraged to use. Carpooling, bus system, future trolley system etc. We need to work more closely with Summit County to coordinate Park City access and egress.
